Iranian Traditional Regional Garb-traditional women’s outfits from regions of Iran
Heritage Focus
To explore women’s traditional outfits from the different regions of Iran. Each region has its own style, colours, designs that represent the culture and history of those geographical areas.
For example, in Northern Iran there is lush green landscape and the colours used in the regional clothing reflects the beauty of that land, i.e. in Gilan many of the clothing is green. In the coastal areas people eat a lot of seafood and that is reflected in the traditional garments though the use of colour or patterns similar to water and marine life.
In contrast, regions with hotter climates people wear lighter, more breathable garment as influenced by the weather conditions. In the coldest regions people wear heavier, warmer garments as reflected in the materials selected to make these garments. We have man Anglo-Iranians living in Brent who come from the culturally diverse regions of Iran. We want to uncover the values and roles these traditional garments from these regional areas represent.

Project Description
This project celebrated Iranian cultural heritage through traditional clothing, storytelling, and communal celebration. It ncluded sessions where participants create traditional garments, including re-purposing old clothing into new designs rooted in tradition.
Members from different Iranian regions were invited to share their memories and experiences, which will be documented through audio recordings, video, or photographs, with the aim of raising awareness among younger generations.
A key event was the celebration of Mehregan – the Iranian festival of loving kindness – on 28th September, during which women will gather in traditional dress to dance and perform, as is customary across Iran.
The project will document this event through photography and film, with the intention of sharing materials with Brent Museum. The garments will be stored appropriately so they can be reused in future celebrations and heritage activities
