Project Summary

Promoting Arab and Iraqi heritage by exploring folklore clothing.

Heritage Focus

To engage Brent residents in discovering the Iraqi historical costumes and allowing people from different backgrounds to display their traditional costumes in the festival and share their photos and memories of their history with Brent people.

Iraq is a beacon of many ancient civilisations, such as Akkadian, Babylonian, Chaldeans and Assyrian periods. Costumes are an important part of this heritage. We aim to promote these costumes to Iraqi and Arab generations in Brent.

We want to preserve and enhance Iraqi and Arab traditional attire by introducing them to all communities in Brent. Costumes are an important part of this heritage. Therefore, our project focused on exploring and making these costumes to enrich Brent’s diverse communities.

Project Description

This project worked with Iraqi designers to deliver a series of workshops teaching participants how to design and tailor traditional Iraqi costumes. Held weekly over a four-month period, the workshops explored the evolution of Iraqi dress across Babylonian, Assyrian, and Islamic civilisations. In addition to the workshops, the project hosted a one-day Arabic and Iraqi heritage event featuring a range of cultural activities. At the conclusion of the programme, an exhibition was held to showcase the garments created by participants. The most outstanding costume produced was presented and donated to both Brent Museum and the Museum of London for public display, ensuring wider recognition of Iraqi cultural heritage.
