Project Description
To celebrate Tamil heritage in Brent by highlighting traditional attire and customs associated with key life events such as weddings and religious festivals. This project will teach participants how to make traditional Tamil clothes, preserving important skills and heritage knowledge. It will create a photographic and video record of traditional clothing used by Tamils from Northern Sri Lanka, suitable for exhibitions and public events to increase awareness and appreciation of Tamil heritage. Oral history interviews will be recorded with older members of the community who arrived in the UK during the 1960s to 1980s, many of whom fled the civil war and sought asylum. These interviews will be conducted by professional radio presenters to ensure high-quality documentation. The project will also seek permission to film and photograph a wedding party to document traditional Tamil attire.

Celebrating Tamil Traditional Clothing, Tamil Association of Brent
Spotlight Story: Cultural Celebration through Fashion and Performance
The Tamil Association of Brent curated a showcase featuring traditional wedding attire, dance, and music. Young people modelled ceremonial garments while older community members shared stories of what those outfits meant to them.
Workshops were held in advance of the event, where teenagers were taught how to drape sarees and fasten traditional jewellery. Participants learned the names and meanings of different items and their roles in religious and social ceremonies.
A senior community member said: “I was emotional seeing our young girls wearing these clothes with pride. It reminded me of home – and of my own wedding.”
In addition to the fashion element, children performed classical Tamil dance and music pieces. Families brought food and photos, and the event became an informal but moving celebration of culture and identity.
