Project Summary 

Goan Heritage and Cultural Event traditional clothing and costumes from the Goan Hindu Community, Goan tribal community and Goan Portuguese or Catholic Community of India. 

Heritage Focus 

Community Stars UK CIC aimed to increase recognition of the Goan community in Brent by researching and documenting traditional Goan clothing and costumes. Given the historical influence of Portuguese rule in Goa, Goan dress reflected a blending of cultural traditions. Many of these garments were not readily available in local shops and must be handmade. The project sought to preserve these heritage styles by involving the community in collecting, stitching, or sourcing traditional attire to ensure younger generations remain connected to their cultural identity.

Project Description 

The project worked with community members to gather traditional Goan garments, appealing to those with items to share. Where clothing was not available, they collaborated with local Brent-based tailors and designers to design, make, or purchase pieces to build a representative collection. 

Community members of all ages were invited to wear traditional attire at a celebratory event, with consent obtained for participation and documentation through photos, videos, and audio. The event included interviews with knowledgeable elders, displays of attire linked to festivals and dances, and performances featuring live music to honour the traditional contexts in which the garments are worn. 

The focus was on maintaining authenticity and celebrating the distinct heritage of the Goan diaspora in Brent.
